After an 11-year stretch in South America, the legendary annual off-road racing event was brought to the middle east for its 2020 incarnation.

The Dakar Rally is an annual, off-road, cross-country rally race in which amateur and pro racers alike compete through rigorous courses over the span of several days.

The Qiddiya Giga Project sits 60 kilometers southwest of Riyadh and is set to become the sports & entertainment capital of the gold coast.

Having just recently broken ground, the Dakar Closing Ceremony was set to be a coronation spectacle to announce Qiddiya on a global scale.

At the time of the event, Qiddiya was a nearly undeveloped swath of desert. In partnership with Live Nation, PHNTM worked to design and install staging and programming for the event’s closing rally

PHNTM blended lighting, video, scenic and special effects elements to create a comprehensive and engaging production to support the evening’s festivities.

SHOW DELIVERY

Dakar A36

PHNTM developed all of the necessary technical drawings of the surface and projection map, seamlessly projecting a single blended image onto the iconic cliff face.

The design likewise required the cohesive integration of 18 vendors. The vendors’ various information sets were blended into one comprehensive technical delivery package for the event

PROJECTION MAPPING

Dakar A48

PHNTM, the design team of Martin Professional, and the Barco projection mapping specialists in the Middle East joined forces and executed a comprehensive projection study and a high-resolution laser scanning of the Tuwaiq Mountain. Ultimately 84 UDX-W40s were used to transform the mountain’s surface into a dramatic backdrop. The massive projection mapping feat now holds a Guinness World Record.

CLOSING STATEMENT

The 8-minute finale consisted of a 4.5 minute, narrative-driven projection-mapped story. The event illustrated the story of the Qiddiya project, closing out as over 12,000 fireworks launched across a 2 kilometer span of sky.

“Given the scale of this project and the time-window, our team worked day and night to break down the walls of the impossible and create a breathtaking unforgettable moment.”
