PHNTM aided in the bridging of minds in order to actualize a collaboration between digital artist Micah Johnson and boutique clothing brand Who Decides War (WDW?), two rising stars in their respective industries.
The creative was inspired by the renowned altar scene in Baz Luhrman’s Romeo + Juliet, with Aku playing the role of Juliet.
PHNTM worked to recreate the altar scene from Romeo + Juliet in Unreal Engine, with Aku playing the role of Juliet.
PHNTM started with the initial Aku model as the base for the project, adorning the model with accessories later. The addition of accessories helped tease the development of Akutars, customizable Aku NFTs that would later be unveiled by Johnson.
PHNTM created intricate 3D textiles inspired by WDW? concept art. In order to accurately replicate the textures of specific material used in WDW?’s clothing design, clothing items were meticulous textured in Unreal Engine. Custom fabric simulations were developed to create the illusion that the accessories on each model were truly manipulated by wind and air in the room.
WDW?’s concept art and the integration of real-world neon signage helped develop the aesthetic for the entire scene. PHNTM worked hand in hand with WDW? to translate their assets into digital space. Using limited inspiration imagery, PHNTM built a digital scene in parallel with their physical production.
As the physical production came together, PHNTM was periodically provided with scenic updates. All updates were integrated into PHNTM’s Unreal Engine scene in real time.
Among the most involved scenic assets created were a series of intricate floral arrangements.
Storyboards allowed PHNTM to create multiple, quick iterations with the client while high-fidelity 3D assets were developed simultaneously.
PHNTM explored multiple camera movements and light event sequencing to explore different ways of revealing the scene.
To further develop a rich atmosphere, PHNTM added detailed secondary elements to the scene. These elements helped texture and inform the world of the teaser video.
Thoughtful lighting design, particle effects, smoke, and falling flower petals added a sense of movement and life.
PHNTM’s team of modelers and animators carefully positioned and posed the Aku model, breathing additional life into the scene. The use of fabric simulations helped bridge the gap between the real world and the metaverse.
PHNTM introduced subtle character movements, fabric simulations, and secondary animation to create visual interest and a more dynamic viewer experience. Each action was carefully animated, and each component of Aku’s accessories were carefully modeled and textured. Bringing real-world textures from WDW’s clothing line into a digital space was a delicate and deliberate process.
Overall, this collaboration bridged brilliant minds and introduced the world to Akutars: customizable NFTs outfitted with real-world accessories and inspiring creativity. The collaboration worked to promote the message behind Aku: one of ingenuity and exploration. This teaser video set the scene for the first of many fashion collaborations between Micah Johnson’s Aku and leading brands like WDW. PHNTM was excited to be involved in one of the first crossovers between real-world branding and the metaverse.
